Open PV Project Compiles U.S. Installation Data

Were you ever wondering where the solar installations are in your state or when they were installed?  Well, now you can answer these questions and more.  The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Department of Energy is overseeing an alliance between the government, solar power companies, and the public to create a database of photovoltaic (PV) installations for the United States.  NREL collects the data voluntarily from utilities, PV installers, and the general public.  The information can be used to understand historical and current market trends.

The Open PV Project offers an easy-to-use, searchable website that allows you to sort and slice PV installation data by state, size, date, and the cost of the system.  Over 78,000 solar electric installations with a capacity of 914 MW have been registered.  Right now, it signifies only a fraction of the current number of PV systems in the U.S., but the data will evolve and the analysis will be more accurate.

They also have cool tools like a visualization of solar installations over time and a market mapper with interactive graphs and charts.  This is just the collaboration’s start.  In the future, the Open PV project hopes to gather even more data used for analysis of the PV industry.
