I’m always excited when I learn about another generous incentive offered for solar power in Massachusetts. This time the incentive comes for the residents of Ipswich, MA. The program, called HELPS PV, is offered through the Ipswich Municipal Light Department to finance the purchase and installation of grid-tied photovoltaic solar systems.
Ipswich residents who are approved for the HELPS PV rebate program will receive a one-time payment of up to $10,000. The maximum rebate is calculated at $3.00 per watt, depending on the equipment used in the solar installation. There is a $0.50 per watt adder if you use solar panels or an inverter manufactured by a Massachusetts company. I would consider this a very aggressive rebate especially from a municipal utility. In comparison, the maximum incentive from the state-funded Commonwealth Solar II rebate program for 2011 will be $1.70 per watt for the first 5 kW DC – up to $8,500.
If you live in Ipswich, you should give solar power strong consideration. Coupled with the federal and state tax credits and high revenue streams expected from Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), you won’t find a better investment. Payback on a typical project can be less than 5 years depending on your available roof space, orientation, and shade.
Rebates are not available for do-it-yourself projects and you will have to involve a solar professional to qualify. Brightstar Solar is a licensed Massachusetts solar installer.
