We hear the same New Year’s resolutions every year. They usually consist of losing weight or breaking a smoking habit. These are both respectable, but I have one to add to the list. I challenge you to take a better control of your energy strategy.
- Lose the lights – Did you know that 10 to 20% of residential energy use comes from home lighting? When you walk in one room and leave the other, turn off the lights behind you. You should also check out energy-saving lights like compact fluorescents (CFLs) and LEDs. Believe me, if you do some research, you will see how quickly the technology is changing. I’m amazed how comparable CFLs and LEDs can be to the standard incandescent bulb.
- Take advantage of programs – Most people don’t know about the energy programs available through their state or utility. These can include rebates, tax incentives, 0% financing (in some cases), and free services. In Massachusetts, the Mass Save program will perform a free energy assessment and subsidize up to 75% of energy improvements. Not bad!
- Have some foresight – Every time you bring electronics and appliances into your home, make sure you pick up the energy efficient model. You may have to pay a couple extra dollars for it today, but that can equal a lot of money over time.
- Invest in renewables – It can be the gift that keeps giving. With the rebates and tax incentives available for renewable energy, like solar power, wind, and geothermal, it can be one of the best investments you make. You will be saving money long after the time it takes to pay for it.
Brightstar Solar is a licensed solar contractor that offers free evaluations in Massachusetts and Connecticut to find out if solar electricity is right for your home or business. Be part of the solution, and request your evaluation. We would be happy to navigate you through the incentives available and show you how solar power can save you money.
We hope you make the commitment to a better energy plan. Have a safe and happy New Year!
