Are Solar Panel Cleaners Worth It?

You’ve installed solar panels on your home, and now you are wondering how to make the most of your investment.  The best way to do this is ensure that your solar panels have optimal conditions to generate electricity.  There are several companies out there that claim that you need special cleaners to keep your panels clean and ensure the best possible production.   It’s ultimately your decision, but water and a soft brush or even Windex should do the trick.

The good news is a solar installation is virtually maintenance free.  Solar panels have no mechanical parts and they can sit on your roof for more than 30 years with no issues.  Regular rainfall should be enough to clean your panels on a daily basis, but some experts say buildup can cut production by 10 to 15 percent.  When there is little rain, hosing off your panels should restore full-power production.  Be sure not to rinse solar panels in very hot weather because theoretically the glass could break due to thermal shock. We recommend that you spray solar panels in the mornings or after the sun sets and the panels have cooled.

Pollen and/or bird droppings may accumulate in certain times of the year.  If pollen, dirt, and bird droppings are adhering to the surface of the solar panel, we typically recommend you use a soft brush and a glass cleaner to remove the buildup.  You can create your own eco-friendly cleaner by mixing 1/4 cup of soap or detergent, 1/8 cup vinegar, and 1 cup water.  There are companies that can take care of maintenance on your behalf, but I don’t think they are worth it if you can give the panels a little attention one or two times a year.
