Connecticut Solar Rebate Stays the Same for 2011

Unlike other state rebate programs that are funded on an annual or quarterly basis, Connecticut’s solar photovoltaic (PV) rebate for residential installations will remain the same for 2011.  Currently, there is not a rebate program for commercial installations, but the state has two generous grant programs – On-Site Renewable Distributed Generation (OSDG) Program and the ARRA Commercial Solar PV Program.

The rebate program, administered the CT Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), for residential solar installations has not changed since July 1st, 2009.  Connecticut solar installers are relieved that the incentive has stayed the same for continuity of existing contracts.  Massachusetts’ Commonwealth solar rebate, on the other hand, has stepped down two times during that same time period.

Residents in United Illuminating (UI) Company or Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P) service territories can participate in the program.  Homeowners must take part in CCEF’s Home Energy Solutions Program to qualify for the rebate, which includes an in-depth energy assessment of your residence.

The Connecticut solar rebate payment is adjusted by expected production and is based on the efficiency of your system.  The rebates are capped at $1.75 per watt for the first 5 kilowatts and $1.25 per watt for the next 5 kilowatts (maxing out at $15,000 for a 10 kW system).    The solar installation must be grid-connected and construction must be done by a pre-approved Connecticut solar installer.  Homes can be one- to four-family residences.

The CT Clean Energy Fund has posted on their site that the following considerations can maximize your rebate:

– An inverter that is 94% efficient or better

– No shading on the site

– PV panels facing solar south (plus or minus 20 degrees)

– PV panels tilted at a 35-degree angle

Please remember, the solar rebate is only one out of many incentives that are offered for Connecticut solar installations.  Rebates are not available for “do-it-yourself” projects and installations must be completed by professional, licensed solar contractors.  Please talk to an approved Connecticut solar installer to schedule a free evaluation to determine if you have good site for solar power and find out about the wide range of incentives available to you.
