Block 5 of Mass Solar Rebate to Begin Jan 14th

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has announced that Block 5 of the Commonwealth Solar II rebate program will open at 3 pm on Friday, January 14th, 2011.  Block 4 was closed on November 30th, 2010, for both Expedited and Non-Expedited installers.  MassCEC will host a web presentation on January 13th for PV contractors to talk about the changes and other details of the program.

New incentive levels have been announced for Block 5. The MassCEC has established a rate change in order to provide funding to a larger number of projects while making sure solar power is still affordable to Massachusetts homeowners and businesses.   The incentive change will allow 200 additional projects to obtain rebates that wouldn’t have if the rates remained the same.  Funding for the Commonwealth Solar II program will be in place for the rest of calendar year 2011.

The new rebate levels for Block 5 are as follows:

Base Incentive – $0.75 per watt (DC @ STC)

Massachusetts Company Components Adder – $0.10 per watt (DC @ STC)

Moderate Home Value Adder OR Moderate Income Adder – $0.85 per watt (DC @ STC)

I am certain that the rebate change will not have a profound effect on the economics of a solar installation in the state.  This is mainly due to the prices of solar power equipment coming down.  Massachusetts remains as one of the best states to invest in solar in the country.  I do think, however, that the downward trend for incentives will continue as photovoltaic equipment becomes cheaper and more efficient.  The moral of this story is if you’re interested in solar energy in Massachusetts; don’t wait to act on the project.
